Heritage Academy – from small beginnings, the Academy has grown in strength to become a national force to improve the recruitment, education and training of a South West Heritage skills workforce. Supported by the Prince’s Trust and the CITB (the training body for construction skills), it has re-branded itself to become the National Heritage Training Academy South-West (www.nhtasw.org.uk) . The Academy is chaired by Woodchester Mansion Director, Stephen Davis and is run by full-time post-holder, Jane Davis, who is raising the profile of the Academy throughout the sector. At the College, the ‘Heritage Academy’ is the driving force behind a range of programmes and initiatives to increase the number of Heritage based courses and options available from Cirencester College. In 2006 the BTEC Countryside and Environment (level 2) course was launched, followed by the BTEC Countryside Management (level 3) course in 2007. The courses are highly practical and students are involved in a range of exciting local projects including restoring canals and managing woodland. Further long and short courses are planned for the future to upskill Heritage workers and to train those wanting to enter the industry. A Heritage Foundation Degree is scheduled to be launched in 2009 and short craft and business-related courses are at the drawing board stage, to provide individuals with the skills to successfully market and run their own businesses.
