Archant’s Cheltenham office recruited their first apprentice back in 2010. As early adopters of the government apprenticeship scheme and following 6 successful years, we continue to support the scheme linked with Cirencester College. The divisions based in Cheltenham have now taken on the most apprentices across the Archant business during this time.
As a large regional newspaper and magazine publisher, we already had a successful and well established reporter trainee programme in our newspaper editorial divisions but the government schemes gave new opportunities for us in the marketing, business administration and digital disciplines.
Initially we started off with one apprentice in our direct marketing team; this team manages the magazine subscriptions across our large national & regional magazine portfolio. A well established team with an enthusiastic and capable manager this offered an ideal environment for an apprentice.
Working with Cirencester College proved to be an excellent partnership; guiding us through how the apprenticeship scheme worked, the learning journey for the apprentice and how the apprentice would be supported and managed by Archant. The team at Cirencester were superb; from the recruitment phase helping us to find and select good candidates, thorough induction and then the ongoing monitoring.
With apprenticeships, employers can work with a wide variety of training organisations; however as a company we haven’t found one on a par with Cirencester College. It’s not just that they offer quality learning, it’s also the ongoing commitment to the apprentice, their genuine focus on student wellbeing and how they work and support both the apprentice & employer. We have and plan to continue to recruit some bright new talent to our team via the apprenticeship scheme and this has been made possible through working with such an excellent partner as Cirencester College. People development is a core strategic pillar for Archant, and the scheme matches that perfectly.
