Basic Bicycle Maintenance

This one day course is aimed at those who have little experience in bicycle maintenance, the emphasis is for participants to learn how to attempt basic tasks and gain new skills. This course is ideal for those who have left their bicycle uncared for a period of time and want to re-engage in cycling.

The course will be delivered by Hywel Thomas,

Hywel is a professionally qualified and experienced bicycle technician, he will support participants in gaining further knowledge in relation to basic bicycle maintenance.

This is a funded course, so free to participants that:

  • have lived in the UK or EU for at least 3 years
  • are aged 19 and over

What topics are covered?

  • Identifying parts of the bicycle.
  • How to fit mud guards and lights.
  • How to conduct a bicycle safety and operating inspection.
  • Understanding basic tools and their uses.
  • How to clean and lubricate parts of the bicycle.
  • Essential road side maintenance.
  • How to repair a puncture.
  • Storing a bike.

How will I learn?

There will be both practical and theoretical parts to this course.

What do I need to bring?

Participants are required to bring along their own bicycle

 

On the day basic tools and accessories will be supplied.

However, if you are in possession of Allen keys and tyre levers specific to your bike please bring these with you.

Additionally, if you have a bicycle work stand and tool kit, bring them along to the course.

Participants will be required to state size of inner tube for their bike when booking,

 

It is advised to bring clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, due to the practical nature of the course.

What else do I need to know?

When booking please state size of inner tube in notes section, as a spare will be provided for you to attempt to repair a puncture.
