Making Friends with your Sewing Machine : Make Your Own Advent Calendar

A beautiful and personal way to countdown the days to Christmas, you will use a combination of simply stitched hand embroidery with patchwork fabrics to create a piece that is unique to you. Each pocket will hold a small sweet, little treat or an activity tag.

What topics are covered?

  • How to transfer embroidery designs to fabric
  • How to stitch two embroidery stitches; back stitch and French knots
  • Cut fabric for pockets using a rotary cutter or by templates
  • Make pockets using a sewing machine
  • Layering wadding and backing to create a quilted hanging
  • Bind and add hanging triangles

What do I need to bring?

Sewing machine


General purpose sewing thread to match the main fabric colour

Embroidery needles

All-purpose sewing needles

A materials kit will be available for purchase £25

You will need a small range of 6 stranded embroidery floss, scraps of fabric each at least 3” square, ½ m fabric suitable for embroidery and ½ m each of backing and wadding (the kit will contains all of this)
