Equine Care

Equine Care will give you the chance to develop a range of employability skills as well as the personal qualities and attitudes essential for a career working with horses. There are a huge and varied range of local opportunities for work in this sector. For much of the week, you will be outside, working with our collection of horses. In addition to this, you will work with the yard pigs, goats, sheep and chickens. The course covers a range of units, which will develop your understanding of equine health issues and husbandry, as well as helping you see the range of exciting careers available in this sector. This one-year Level 2 course offers routes into employment or progression on to selected Level 3 Diplomas, such as Equine Management.

What will I study?

The course content involves a mix of practial work at our own yard as well as theoretical principles taught on college main site.

How will I learn?

The horse industry is a multi billion pound, fast moving, innovative and exciting world with excellent opportunities and many different career paths. As part of this course you will have the opportunity to study a number of different horse related topics. You will study in a practical location at our own yard and on site here at College. This will provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress into the world of work or into further education and enable you to achieve your career goals. We will work with you as individuals to ensure you get the very most out of your studies, regardless of your previous experience and knowledge. Taught by industry specialists with a wide range of skills and experiences, we really will push you to be the best that you can be and offer you advice and guidance to enable you to achieve your goals.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

·       Mainly grade 3s at GCSE

·       NVQ Level 1 or First Diploma

or you are:

·       Pre 16

·       Home or Steiner educated

Careers Information


Will I have to study all week?

Units will be taught on different days of the week depending on the College timetable. You will be timetabled for one day a week of work experience. You are expected to use free time to do research and assignments.

Will I have a work placement?

Yes.  Work experience is a mandatory element of the course.  This is mostly completed at the college yard, although it is possible to have placement outside of the college environment.

Will I need special equipment?

You will need your own sturdy boots, overalls and wet weather gear. Further safety equipment will be dicussed with you when you start at college.
