What will I study?

Over the two years you will study a range of units which will give you give you an overview of the latest IT used in industry and equip you with the necessary skills to go forward in your IT career. 

Information Technology Systems (Written 2 hour examination) 

This unit will provide you with an insight into the different IT systems which organisations use. Also examining the relationship between the user and systems.  You will also learn how to setup and configure IT systems which will benefit you personally and professionally. 

Creating Systems to Manage Information 

In order to produce information to support many business processes as well as our social lives, relational databases are widely used to manage and process data.

Using Social Media for Business

You may be familiar with social media for personal use and in this unit you will discover how it can be used in a business context. 

Programming

Organisations and individuals increasingly depend on the functions and services offered by computing devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal desktop computers. You will make use of computing programs when using an operating system or application programs such as word processing and spreadsheets.

Data Modelling

In all aspects of life, individuals are constantly faced with situations where they must weigh up the available information in order to produce alternatives and make decisions. Data modelling is an essential tool for an IT professional.

Website Development

Computer Games Development - Have you always wanted to design your own game? In this unit you get an opportunity to create a 2D or 3D game using industry recognised software. 

Cyber Security and Incident management

In this unit you will get an insight into how organisations stay safe against online threat and how they cope with disruptions to their IT services. 

IT Service Delivery

Organisations are increasingly reliant on IT to perform everyday tasks, deliver goals and ensure customers’ needs are met, therefore delivery of high-quality IT services are a must for an organisation to be successful.

IT Technical Support and Management 

Gain an insight into the world of IT support - from learning the skills needed to diagnose an IT problem to configuring complex IT servers.  

Digital 2D and 3D Graphics and Digital Animation and Effects 

Learn how to create profesional 2D and 3D animations using the latest software - you will have the opportunity to use models, textures, lighting and  to create a professional computer generated animation. 

Options

There are 2 pathways: The Extended Diploma 1080 GLH and the Diploma 720 GLH.

Extended Diploma 1080 GLH

The Extended Diploma 1080 GLH is a full time programme equivalent to 3 A-levels. 

Diploma 720 GLH

On the Diploma 720 GLH pathway, learners will complete a programme equivalent to 2 A-levels. 

How will I learn?

You will study for one externally assessed exam and complete several externally set tasks completed under exam conditions. All other units are internally assessed where you will complete practical activities and submit assignments. From building computers to setting up networks to writing code and creating computer games - the Btec IT level 3 will provide you with a wide range of IT skills   

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed with one external exam a number of externally assessed tasks set by BTEC. Learners will also complete internally assessed assignments. Clear deadlines will be set for each assignment.  These deadlines must be met in order to ensure you have the opportunity of gaining Merit and Distinction grades.

Are there any extra costs?

Whilst the college does not require students to have their own computer for this course, students would benefit from having a computer at home on which they could complete their assignments.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

Grade 4 in GCSE Maths and GCSE English.

What enrichment activities are offered?

Guest speakers from local IT based organisations visit to discuss the work they do and inform students of any apprenticeship schemes and job opportunities available.

Previous trips have included visits to Bletchley Park.

Not necessarily.  However, you are expected to have a genuine interest in IT.
