What will I study?

How can you be sure your product will be popular? How can you improve your company's reputation? How do you re-structure your business if it means making people redundant?  Learn how to deal with the pressures of running businesses of all sizes, from sole traders to being in charge of multinationals like Apple or Coca-Cola.  You will make and justify decisions on Finance, Marketing, Operations and Human Resources, just as you would have to in real businesses. Consider how you would satisfy the needs and wants of shareholders, employees, local communities and suppliers. If you understand how Business works, you understand how the world works.

How will I learn?

There are a number of methods we use in our study of Business:

  • We consider some of the main academic theories regarding successful management of businesses, in particular how to best respond to a changing business environment
  • we look carefully at the main financial documents produced by major businesses, and how stakeholders use these to guage performance (so you will have to be comfortable using numbers)
  • at every opportunity, we consider how the business concepts and ideas studied in class are relevant to our everyday lives, and to the businesses we all use

How will I be assessed?

A level assessment is through 3 exams which are all taken at the end of the second year.  The subject matter for each exam can come from any part of the syllabus and the exams are made up as follows:

Paper 1 (2 hours) – Marketing, people and global business

Paper 2 (2 hours) – Business decisions and strategy

FAQs

Does it matter if I haven't done GCSE Business Studies?

No, many of our high performing candidates had not studied it before. It is assumed that you have no prior business knowledge and you will be guided step-by-step through the course.

Do I need to be good at Maths?

It certainly helps! A lot of Business decisions are based on the analysis of numbers (marketing, operational and financial). The better you are with Maths, the easier you will find justifying your decisions, based on the numbers.

Is it the same as Economics?

No definitely not, they go very well together in fact.
