**GCSE Grade 4 will be required for English and Maths

If a student does not have a GRADE 4 in English Language or Maths it is a legal requirement to resit either a GCSE or Level 2 in Functional Skills whilst at College.  However, we also recommend they resit to get a grade 5.

Subjects requiring English at grade 4

  • Vocational Level 3 Business and IT
  • Childcare
  • All other written A Levels

In addition the following subjects also need other specific minimum GCSE requirements:

Biology:

B in Biology or

B in Core and Additional Science

Chemistry:

B in Chemistry or

B in both Core and Additional Science

History

C required in that subject

Electronics:

C in Core and Additional Science

Languages:

B required or proven aptitude in the language(s)

Physics:

B in Physics or

B in both Core & Additional Science and grade 6 in Maths

We strongly recommend that you take AS-level Maths alongside Physics

Level 2 Diploma in Science will not qualify for A/AS-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

Level 3 Vocational Courses

For Vocational Extended Diplomas you will need:

Distinction in a Level 2 Diploma or 5 grade Cs at GCSE including 3 from the following group:

  • Business Studies

  • Foreign Language
  • Geography
  • History
  • Law
  • Maths **
  • Music
  • Psychology
  • Philosophy

  • Religious Studies

  • Science (double or single subjects)

  • Sociology

Subjects requiring Maths at grade 4

  • Business and IT Vocational Level 3
  • Childcare Level 3 (or 3 and get 4 during the course)

Level 2 Diploma Merit* or Distinction will be counted as one GCSE

Level 2 GCSE/Vocational Courses

GCSE English/Maths/Science

  • are home educated

  • have relocated from abroad

  • have had a disrupted education through ill health

Vocational Pathways are for students who

  • prefer assessment through coursework not exams and entry requirements are mainly grade Ds (Maths, English level 3s) at GCSE and up to 3 grade Cs or NVQ Level 1 or 1st diploma

Level 1 Vocational Courses/Traineeships

Mainly grade Es at GCSE

Planned Learning Hours for all Students

Students need to be enrolled on a Study Programme of  a minimum of 540 hours and up to 600 hours.  The combinations will relate to your GCSE profile which equates to:

  • 4 A-levels
  • 3 A-levels + 1 AS-level
  • 3 A-levels
  • 3 AS Levels + Vocational Sub Dip
  • Vocational Extended Diploma
  • Vocational Extended Diploma  + 1 AS-level
  • Vocational Diploma + 1 A-level
  • Level 2 Diploma
