The Land, Wildlife and Countryside sector is a large, dynamic and exciting industry to be involved in. What will I study in Land and Wildlife (Environment & Conservation) Level2 Certificate?
The level 2 Land and Wildlife couse is part of the transition programme at Cirencester College which has three different elements: to improve your English and Maths at whatever level you are at individually (either retaking your GCSE or studying Functional Skills); a work placement where you will develop employability skills; and the Land and Wildlife element where you will study a number of Land Based topics which might include some of the following:
- Woodland Management
- Urban Habitat Management and Conservation
- Estate Skills
- Land Based Machinery Operations.
Entry Requirements
Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or higher
How will I learn?
This is a transitional programme, designed to raise your literacy and numeracy skills. In addition, you will learn to work with a variety of species in our animal centre. Work experience is an important ascpect of this qualification, and a placement should be found before September. We have a range of units that are taught but our core units include:
- Manage Vegitation by Coppicing
- Manage Equipement and Machines
- Practical Hedgerow Managment
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by practical observations and course work.
Any trips?
Land and Wildlife (Countryside Conservation) go on numerous trips - some examples are listed here:.
- Some of these will be to carry out work in the local area that is relevant to the landbased industries - these include working in places like Daneway Banks on woodland management and conservation
- Working on conservation projects with the Wilts and Glos wildlife trusts.
- Carrying out estate skills at the college equine yard.
Are there any costs involved?
You should expect some small costs for stationary and course specific booklets.
You will also be expected to supply your own PPE - a pair of steel toe capped work boots are essential.

Wiil I be in a classroom all the time?
You will be in the classroom for part of your studies - but the course has a strong practical flavour, so you will be working outside of the classroom in a practical context frequently.
Will this course prepare me for employment?
This is a very work based learning course that has been designed to help you into employment and an exciting career.
Will this course enable me to progress into level 3 provision at Cirencester College?
If after completion of the level 2 course, you have achieved the entry requirements for your chosen level 3 course you will be able to progress.
Will there be support to help me achieve?
The land based team are experienced and dedicated to supporting you to be the best that you can, so you can be assured of a supportive environment.
What if I don't want to progress into level 3 provision, will college help with apprenticeships?
You will have access to our apprenticeship team who will guide you through the process of looking for a suitable apprenticeship if this is your desired pathway.
What will the course prepare me for career wise?
The teaching team will work with you throughout your course to ensure you are aware of the various pathways available to you should you decide to go into the workplace. Employment opportunities may include Estate Worker, Landscaping, Tree Surgeon.
