What Will I Study?

You will learn to work with a variety of taxa in our animal centre. We have a range of units that are taught but our core units include:

  • Maintain animal health and welfare
  • Animal feeding and accommodation
  • Animal behaviour and handling
  • Working in the animal care industry
  • Health and safety in the land-based industry

Alongside these core units you will also complete more specific subjects for example; Care of exotic animals and british wildlife species.

Units will be taught on different days of the week depending on the College timetable. You are expected to use free time to do research and assignments.

This course has the potential to lead on to the Level 3 Advanced technical Animal Management course.

You will enjoy a variety of course related and end of year trips. Examples of these are:

  • Bristol Zoo
  • Siccaridge woods
  • Lowermoor farm
  • West midlands safari park

We also do end of year overnight trips to various locations in the UK.

The College provides materials for the course but students must supply their own outdoor clothing. You will work outdoors in all conditions. A lab coat will need to be purchased from College for approx £16.
