Animal Care Level 2 Certificate

This exciting and active course will give you the chance to work with and study a variety of animals in both practical and classroom settings. This course will support you in developing a range of real employability skills, as well as the personal qualities and attitudes needed for success in a working life with animals. It can also enable you to progress to Level 3 courses.

What will I study in Animal Care Level 2 Certificate?

This is a transitional programme, designed to raise your literacy and numeracy skills. In addition, you will learn to work with a variety of species in our animal centre. Work experience is an important aspect of this qualification, and a placement should be found before September. We have a range of units that are taught but our core units include:

Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
Select and prepare accommodations for animals
Provide feed and water to animals

Entry Requirements

Minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 3 or higher.

How will I learn?

Units will be taught on different days of the week depending on the College timetable. You will be timetabled for one day a week of work experience. You are expected to use your free time to do research and assignments.

Students learn through a variety of practical and theoretical lessons. We also incorporate guest speakers and trips to ensure students get a wide variety of learning environments

How will I be assessed?

The Animal part of your level 2 course will be assessed by practical observation and course work.

You will enjoy a variety of course related and end of year trips. Examples of these are:

West Midlands Safari Park

Are there any costs involved?

The College provides materials for the course but students must supply their own outdoor clothing. You will work outdoors in all conditions. You will also need to purchase appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for working in our Animal Centre (a scrub top). Information on this will be given to you when you start.

FAQs

How much time is spent handling animals?

You will have a weekly duties session where you will carry out husbandry (feeding, cleaning, handling and health checking) with all the animals across the collection. Additional animal handling is dependent on the unit being taught; with some units being more hands on than others.

Do I need to do any work experience?

Work experience provides vital insight into what it is like to work with animals. Ideally you will start looking for a work experience placement, to start in September. We will try and help those really struggling to find a placement.

What can I do with a Level 2 in Animal Care?

Students have a variety of options open to them, including: direct employment, eg as a Kennel Hand and Pet Store Operative; apprenticeships, including Vet Nurse and Dog Groomer; or progressing onto Level 3, having achieved a satisfactory grade at Level 2
