Are you looking for a science-based learning opportunity that could lead to a job in the sports sector and allow you to progress into higher education? If the answer is yes, then this could be the ideal course for you. Sport and Exercise Science combines theory and practical sessions to cover core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics. These elements together will make you a much more confident and competent practitioner who is able to take on considerable responsibility in the workplace. Please note that to do well on this programme you must have a genuine interest in science.

What will I study in Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Diploma?

Diploma

Diploma 720 GLH  (Equivalent in size to two A Levels.)

In this course, you will study 8 units 6 of which are mandatory and 3 are external. Mandatory content (83%). External Assessment (46%)

Sport and Exercise Physiology (Written Exam)

Functional Anatomy (Written Exam)

Applied Psychology (Written Exam)

Field and Lab based Fitness Testing

Research Methods

Coaching for Performance

Plus two from the following:

Sports Massage

Specialised Fitness Testing

In this unit, you will study 4 units 3 of which are mandatory and 2 are external. Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (58%).

Entry Requirements

At least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including 3 from the basket subjects including a Grade 4 in Biology/Science. A qualification in PE is preferable but not compulsory.

How will I learn?

The course is designed to give you experience of a variety of learning opportunities. In class learning will take place through lectures, group work (both in theory and practical settings), guest speakers, and off site opportunities etc

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a mixture of written examinations, case study assessments and written tasks. Students will also complete verbal presentations throughout the duration of the course.

You will not be assessed on your practical ability.

Any trips?

You will have the opportunity to complete off site visits relevant to the units that you are taught. We visited the Bodyworld Exhibition in London (www.bodyworlds.com) as part of the Functional Anatomy unit. We also visit a range of universities to study related aspects of the course.

Other trips will be organised in relation to what is being studied at that time.

Are there any costs involved?

There is a course cost of £65, this is for a folder, file dividers, course handbook, unit booklets and a textbook. Your son/ daughter will receive this as a pack at the start of the year and the textbook will be used in all lessons. This fee also is an entry for our sports presentation evening, 2 trips to a University to undertake in depth Sport Science testing and lectures and a further course specific trip. Students are asked to buy the kit separately, more information will be available via email.
