Who is an ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) course for?

This course is ideal if:

  • English is not your first language
  • You live in the UK and want to improve your English for work, everyday life, or to support your family
  • You would like to study in a supportive adult‑focused environment

All learners begin with a free English assessment, so you join the right level class.

What will you learn on an ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) course?

All ESOL courses help you develop:

  • Speaking skills for conversations, appointments and work
  • Listening skills for understanding instructions, school teachers, doctors, everyday English and workplace language
  • Reading skills for forms, emails, letters, leaflets, school work, bus timetables, packaging and other real‑life texts
  • Writing skills for job applications and everyday communication

You’ll learn practical English to help you manage daily life with more confidence.

What ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) level are there and what do they mean?

We offer several levels so you can progress at a pace that suits you.

(You will be assessed at the start to find the right level.)

ESOL Beginners (Pre Entry and Entry Level 1)

For learners who speak very little English or are starting from the beginning. You will work towards an Edexcel Skills for Life ESOL qualification at Entry Level 1.

ESOL Entry Levels (Entry 2–3)

For learners who want to build overall confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. You can work towards an Entry Level Edexcel ESOL qualification matched to your level. These are for students with survival English – who can get by in normal life, but we can help you develop confidence and stronger skills.

ESOL Level 1 & Level 2

For learners who already have good English skills, can hold a conversation, and want to develop more advanced language for work or study. You can work towards an Edexcel Skills for Life ESOL qualification at Level 1 or 2.

How is ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) assessed?

Each level includes assessments in:

  • Speaking and listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

Courses are divided into three parts with three exams. 

There is an option to not sit exams. Your tutor will work with you to set your own targets for the course.

Are ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) funded?

In many cases, ESOL courses are free or offered at a reduced cost, depending on your circumstances.

ESOL courses will be fully funded if you:

  • You are a permanent resident in the UK
  • Are aged 19+ on the 31st August pre your course start
  • You are in receipt of benefits or earn less than £25,750 per year
    (If you earn more than the specified amount, you will be co-funded.)
    (Correct for academic year 25/26)
Your circumstances will be discussed in your inital meeting.
But to find out if you are eligible for fee remission if you are unsure, please contact the Adult Education team.

When do ESOL (English for Speaker of Other Languages) classes run?

ESOL courses run from September to July. However, you can join in September, January, or April.
We offer a range of morning and afternoon classes for all levels (allowing for school drop off and pick up) and an evening class for higher levels. Your timetable options will be discussed during your assessment.
