Grow Your Own

Within this 10 week hands on practical course participants will learn how to grow their own vegetables.

Using the fantastic outdoor facilities at Roots and Seeds Kitchen Garden, participants will gain an understanding of the processes required to grow their own produce. Whilst recognising the wellbeing benefits that gardening can have.

The course will be run by a facilitator from Down to Earth Stroud, who will impart their knowledge on what to consider before and during the various stages of vegetable growing.

In order to be eligible for a FREE place on this course:

  • You need to be aged 19 or over
  • Unemployed and claiming benefits / or earning less than £20,319
  • Have a social or emotional difficulty, or challenges with mental health or emotional wellbeing.
  • Lived in the UK/EU for at least the past 3 years

What topics are covered?

The course will cover the following topics:

  • What is a seed and what does it need to germinate.
  • Understanding space for growing different types of vegetables.
  • Best composts to use for seed sowing and potting.
  • Introduction to making compost.
  • How and when to water or feed.
  • Protection from predators e.g slugs and snails
  • How to plan your own veg plot.

How will I learn?

Participants will learn through:

  • Demonstrations
  • Practical tasks
  • Reflective feedback

What do I need to bring?

This is a hands on practical course and participants should dress in attire they don’t mind getting dirty. Due to the course being conducted outside participants need to be mindful of weather conditions and dress appropriately for these.

Sturdy footwear and gardening gloves are recommended.
