Recently, Year 1 Politics students and Year 2 Law students enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Supreme Court and Houses of Parliament.
This trip offered a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of how the legislature operates and the vital role of the judiciary in our democracy. Students explored the Supreme Court, even sitting in the seats of Justices, while learning about its creation under the 2005 Constitutional Reform Act and its function in hearing cases and holding government to account.
The day was full of memorable moments, including witnessing Sir Keir Starmer being driven from 10 Downing Street to Parliament for Prime Minister’s Questions: a key element of political scrutiny.
Students toured Parliament, observed a live debate on taxation in the House of Commons, and took part in an interactive workshop where they created their own political parties and manifestos.
The visit concluded with an engaging talk from South Cotswolds MP, Dr Roz Savage, who shared her journey to Parliament and insights into the role of an MP.
Students gained a real appreciation of how Politics and Law intersect, working hand in hand as essential pillars of British society.
Year 1 Politics student, Summer, said “I had lots of fun, and my favourite moment was watching the debate in parliament.”
Scott added “It was very fun and educational! Seeing Sir Keir Starmer being driven out to PMQ made Politics seem more real.”
