Latin GCSE
Studying Latin will deepen your understanding of language, history and the ancient world while developing valuable analytical and critical thinking skills. It provides an excellent foundation for higher education in subjects such as Classics, Ancient History, English, Modern Languages, Medicine and Law. You'll also gain a greater understanding of the origins of many English words and scientific and legal terms, helping to strengthen your vocabulary, problem-solving skills, memory and attention to detail.
What will I study in Latin GCSE?
The course will cover the 3 key components assessed in the exams:
- Component 1 - Language (50%): grammar and vocabulary, studied over the 2 years.
- Component 2 - Literature (30%): a selection of texts, studied in the second year.
- Component 3B - Roman civilisation (20%): a study of Roman culture and society, studied over the 2 years.
Entry Requirements
The first year will run as an Enrichment course, so everyone is welcome to join. For accessing the second year (and the formal GCSE qualification) we will require a high level of attendance, full commitment to the course and a track record of satisfactory results in the first year.
How will I learn?
- Language Analysis
Students learn how Latin grammar and vocabulary work, including translating sentences accurately and recognising patterns in language structure. - Problem-Solving
Translating Latin requires careful thinking, deduction, and attention to detail — similar to solving puzzles. - English Vocabulary Development
Many English words come from Latin, so studying Latin improves understanding of word roots, spelling, and meaning. - Critical Thinking
Students analyse Roman texts, myths, and historical sources, learning to interpret evidence and ideas thoughtfully. - Cultural and Historical Understanding
The course builds knowledge of life in ancient Rome, including religion, politics, literature, and daily life, helping students understand how Roman culture influenced the modern world.
How will I be assessed?
Three exam papers at the end of the second year:
1 – Latin Language (1hr 30mins)
2 – Latin Literature (1hr 15mins)
3 – Roman Civilisation (1hr)
Any trips?
- Corinium Museum
- Cirencester Amphitheatre
- Students can join the Rome trip organised by Classics and Ancient History
Are there any costs involved?
There will be no costs involved: the grammar books will be provided by the College, while the textbooks are available for free online through the Cambridge Latin Course project.
