Mandarin for Beginners

Are you interested in finding out more about Chinese culture? Do you enjoy holidaying in China or Mandarin-speaking countries, and want to learn the language? Do you have family or friends who live there? This course is perfect if you have little or no previous knowledge of the language.

By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate with sympathetic native speakers, ask for and understand information using basic phrases and be able to express opinions in a variety of everyday tourist situations.

You will have the opportunity to develop your conversational and listening skills around a theme each week, e.g. food, travel, restaurants, and cafés, as well as a little time spent on reading, and writing skills in Mandarin.

As communication is the main objective of this course, students work in pairs or groups to practise speaking and listening. Recorded material, such as CDs and authentic listening texts/videos will also be regularly used to improve listening skills.

We will spend a little time learning about written Mandarin. Mandarin will be the medium of instruction as far as possible.  There is no formal testing, but homework may be given each week.

What do I need to bring?

Notepad/paper and a pen.

You are of course welcome to bring bottled water or filled travel mugs with you should you wish.

What else do I need to know?

For beginners – No prior knowledge of the language is assumed. This course is suitable for students who have never studied Mandarin before.
