If you're fascinated by the difference sport science can make at the highest levels of performance, where marginal gains often determine success, this could be the course for you. You'll study topics including Functional Anatomy, Applied Sport Psychology and Biomechanics, while developing valuable analytical, evaluative, research, data interpretation and presentation skills. The combination of scientific knowledge and practical skills will equip you for higher education and careers in sport science, including roles such as Sport Scientist, Physiotherapist, Sport Psychologist, Data Analyst and Biomechanist, as well as a wide range of other sport related professions.
What will I study in Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Diploma?
Diploma
The course will combine theoretical lecturers with some practical sessions. These sessions will allow you to apply theoretical knowledge into practical situations. For example, on the Biomechanics unit you will analyse sprinting times of 100m and 400m runners to identify strengths and weaknesses across their race, and analysing why taller players have a mechanical advantage in sports such as tennis.
Lessons will allow you to develop your knowledge in a supportive environment.
The extended Certificate (equivalent to 1 x A level) course has 4 units:

- Coaching of Performance and Fitness
- Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science
The Diploma (equivalent to 2 x A levels has 8 units
- Functional Anatomy
- Applied Sport Psychology
- Coaching of Performance and Fitness
- Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science
- Sport and Exercise Physiology
- Field and Laboratory based fitness testing
- Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science
- Either Specialised fitness training OR Sports Massage

In this unit you will study 4 units 3 of which are mandatory and 2 are external. Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (58%).

Entry Requirements
At least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, from the core subjects, including English, Maths and Biology/Science.
A qualification in PE and a Grade 5 in Science is also recommended.
How will I learn?
The course is designed to give you experience of a variety of learning opportunities. In class learning will take place through lectures, group work (both in theory and practical settings), guest speakers, and off site opportunities etc
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a mixture of written examinations, case study assessments and written tasks. Students will also complete verbal presentations throughout the duration of the course.
You will not be assesed on your practical ability.
Any trips?
There will be the opportunity to go on trips as part of your course, both as part of your assessments and also to deepen your understanding and knowledge of the Sport Science Sector. Trips will be dependent on each unit, with most units having a trip.
There will also be University trips on ‘outreach’ days to experience life in HE; for many Sport Science careers this is the ‘next step’, and we will take you to a range of local Universities.
Further to this, we also welcome in guest speakers to share their insights and knowledge, and you will get to find out what it is really like to work in Sport Science.
Are there any costs involved?
There is no course fee. However, students will be required to purchase sports kit for practical events and off site visits. We will also ask students to pay trip fees; these are usually low cost and spaces are reserved for students on bursarys.
Students will also be required to purchase a folder, file dividers and unit booklets/ revision materials . A revision guide will be loaned to the student for the duration of their study programme.

Are there any course costs?
Yes, there will be some costs related to course kit and booklets.
Do I have to be good at sport to take these courses?
No, your assessments will be based on your knowledge and application, not your ability to perform.
How much of the course is practical?
The course will be roughly 80% theory and 20% practical.
However, on some units this will be higher, and on others this will be lower.
Is there much work to complete outside of lessons?
Yes- there will be internal assessments, homework and flipped study tasks to complete. You will have periods without lessons and we advise you to utilise the library and study spaces to help you stay on top of your studies.
Does every assessment count towards my final grade?
Yes- every internal assessment in college and your exam grades all contribute to your overall grade.
