Recently, A-level English Language students attended the Emagazine English Language Conference at the Friends’ Meeting House in Central London.

They joined over 600 fellow English Language students from across the country to hear from academics about the latest research which they can use in their own investigations into language.

A highlight of the conference was hearing from one academic who drives a special language van around Manchester to collect local voices. The students also enjoyed learning about The Cockney Sparrow, the Road Man, and the Essex Girl, and research into the meanings, myths and misconceptions of ‘normal’ English lead from linguistic to racial and social prejudice caused much debate.

A-level English Language lecturer Lydia said, “The students have told me how fascinating the lectures were, and that they sparked conversations about language issues they hadn’t given much thought before, you can’t ask for more than that!”
