Spanish for Beginners

Are you interested in finding out more about Spanish culture? Do you enjoy holidaying in Spain or Spanish speaking countries, and want to learn the language? Do you have family or friends who live there? This course is perfect if you have little or no previous knowledge of the language.

By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate with sympathetic native speakers, ask for and understand information using basic phrases and be able to express opinions in a variety of everyday tourist situations.

You will have the opportunity to develop your conversational skills around a theme each week, e.g. food, travel, restaurants and cafés, as well as focusing on your listening, reading and writing skills in Spanish.

How will I learn?

As communication is the main objective of this course, students work in pairs or groups to practise speaking and listening. Recorded material, such as CDs and authentic listening texts/videos will also be regularly used to improve listening skills. Understanding written Spanish will be based on everyday items such as notices, leaflets and signs. Spanish will be the medium of instruction as far as possible.  There is no formal testing, but homework will be given each week.

What do I need to bring?

Notepad/paper and a pen.

You are of course welcome to bring bottled water or filled travel mugs with you should you wish.

Any additional costs

This class may use a textbook which you would need to buy separately.

More details of this to come

What else do I need to know?

No prior knowledge of the language is assumed. This course is suitable for students who have never studied Spanish before or who studied the language years ago and want to go back to the basics.
