At College this week, students across Uniformed Protective Services, Performing Arts, Health, Media, and Criminology worked collaboratively to respond to a simulated plane crash.
Over 100 students were involved in the event, with Performing Arts students playing the role of injured casualties, some of them seriously injured. To make it as realistic as possible, students wore special effects makeup to emulate various injuries and stayed in character throughout.
Uniformed Protective Services students were tasked with controlling the incident, which involved recovering and protecting evidence. Health students triaged the injured and provided emergency first aid to those in need.
Media students reported live from the scene and produced interviews with the senior police officer and studio updates on the incident.
Criminology students assisted by carrying out witness interviews to obtain evidential accounts.
Well done to all students involved who demonstrated brilliant commitment and professionalism.
Ava, who is studying Health, said “Disaster Day was a brilliant learning experience. It was realistic enough to give me a better understanding of how a major incident is managed, while helping me identify areas for improvement.”
UPS student, Elsie, said “It was very realistic and gave us a good idea of what a real scene would be like and how we should act.”
Gemma Vinton, Lecturer in Criminology and UPS, said “This was a fabulous opportunity to bring together students from a variety of disciplines across college. Students seemed to have a great time, but more importantly, learnt a lot about how to manage a chaotic scene with a lot of casualties and conflicting priorities. It was great to watch the students come together as a team to work out the best way to overcome challenges within the scenario.”
